Preparing to work on MDF board

MDF boards, like canvas, are a joy to paint on. However, unlike canvas, the MDF boards are not primed.  This means that to get an even, smooth and luminous coat, a primer needs to be applied to a surface that is painted upon. Besides improving the look of the final painted piece, primers also ensure that the water or moisture that comes from paints,  in the board, is absorbed. Hence priming is always recommended before starting to paint on MDF board.

A water-solvent primer or gesso can be applied to the MDF boards using a brush or rollers.  You can spread the gesso evenly across the board, and let it dry.  Priming an MDF is not a time-consuming activity. It is a super easy process and with the variety of Little Birdie Gesso available at the ArtSplash store you can prime the MDF boards with ease. There is a variety of gesso to choose from, white, clear, and black.

Now let’s see how you can use these gesso variants on your surface before you start working. White and clear gesso is ideal for MDF boards that are pre-marked as it helps in seeing the marked lines on the board. Black is ideal to prime the surface of the boards that will be used to create dot mandalas. It is also suitable for transparent bottles that are generally used for dot mandalas.
